The test: two CNC parts, six platforms
Two real CNC-machined components were used for every platform in this test. We chose them deliberately: one is a precision turned part in aluminum with tight bore tolerances, and the other is a multi-setup milled part in alloy steel with a secondary heat treatment step. Together they represent the kind of work that stress-tests an instant quoting engine.
Part 1: Seal Holder (Aluminum 6082-T6)
A fully axisymmetric turned component, Ø68.5 mm OD × 50 mm long. The geometry is pure lathe work: no off-axis holes, no prismatic features, producible in a single turning setup. What makes it demanding is the tolerance stack: two features carry tight limits (Ø48.11 with a 0.04 mm total band, Ø56.44 with a 0.10 mm range), and the bore surfaces require an Ra 1.6 µm finish.
There is also a compound entry chamfer at the bore entrance: two conical faces meet at a short flat land, with non-standard angles (65.91°/155.25°) consistent with a lip-seal installation profile. That detail cannot be cut with a standard chamfer insert; it needs a form tool or a fully interpolated CNC toolpath. An instant quoting engine that ignores the technical drawing will miss both the tight tolerances and the finish requirement and quote this as a straightforward turned sleeve.
Part 2: Bracket (42CrMo4 alloy steel, case hardened)
A prismatic, multi-setup milled part, 196.85 × 82.55 × 57.15 mm. The geometry reads as a shaft-support bracket: a flat base flange with two precision dowel holes (Ø19.05 H7), two integral pedestal walls rising from it, and a semi-cylindrical saddle (R25.4 ±0.05 mm) running across the top to cradle a 50.8 mm shaft or roller. The part requires face milling, profile milling, and precision reaming across at least two setups. Material is 42CrMo4, a high-strength chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. It is tougher to machine than aluminum, with higher tool wear, and the drawing specifies case hardening (nitriding is the typical process for this alloy and geometry).
That last point is significant: nitriding adds an external process step and raises a genuine sequencing question. Ream the H7 holes before or after hardening? The drawing does not specify. A quoting engine that cannot select nitriding at all, or that ignores the drawing’s process note, is quoting a different part.
For each platform, we uploaded the STEP file and technical drawing simultaneously where the tool allowed it. We evaluated every platform across four criteria: quoting reliability, drawing intelligence, price, and speed & flexibility.

Note on Protolabs: Protolabs’ own quoting tool does not offer instant quoting. A request is submitted and a quote arrives by email later. We therefore used the Protolabs Network for this benchmark. All Protolabs results in this article refer to Protolabs Network.
Quoting reliability: only two platforms worked without friction
The first question is the most basic one: does the platform actually produce an instant, order-ready quote? Here is what happened on each platform:
- MakerVerse: Fully automatic, orderable quote for both parts. Upload, select initial specifications, receive quote. No manual intervention at any point.
- Spanflug: Reliable quote for both parts, but the platform does not support direct ordering. A quote can be generated and exported; placing an order requires contacting a manufacturer separately.
- Protolabs (Network): Part 1 required manual corrections — tolerances and surface finishes from the drawing were not automatically applied, and the recalculation froze partway through. For Part 2, only a non-binding estimate was returned. Nitriding was not selectable, so the estimate is almost certainly understated.
- Xometry: On Part 1, uploading the STEP file and technical drawing simultaneously created two separate items instead of one. Tolerances and surface finishes had to be corrected manually. Part 2 worked as expected.
- Fictiv: Price calculation not possible for Part 1. Part 2 requires a manual RFQ workflow.
- RapidDirect: Failed to produce an instant quote for either part despite multiple attempts.
MakerVerse and Spanflug were the only platforms to deliver an order-ready instant quote for both parts. Of those two, only MakerVerse can be used to actually place an order.
Drawing intelligence
Every platform in this test accepts a technical drawing upload. Fewer than half of them actually read it.
The distinction matters more than it might appear. If a platform ignores your drawing’s tolerance callouts, the quote is calculated to default tolerances. You either catch this before ordering, or you don’t, and the manufactured part arrives wrong.

Drawing intelligence is not a UX convenience. A quote calculated without your tolerance callouts is a quote for a different part.
Price: binding quotes only
For a meaningful price comparison, only binding, orderable quotes are directly comparable. Spanflug’s Part 1 quote and Protolabs Network’s Part 2 estimate are included for reference but noted accordingly.

Spanflug quoted Part 1 at €150.25, cheaper than MakerVerse’s €172.47. If price benchmarking is the goal and direct ordering is handled separately, Spanflug is worth including in that process. For anyone who needs to actually place an order, MakerVerse is the lowest binding price for Part 1.
For Part 2, the difference is larger. MakerVerse’s €233.33 is the only binding, orderable quote that includes nitriding. The next complete binding quote, Xometry at €551.76, is 57% higher.

For both parts, Protolabs Network and Xometry quote faster standard delivery than MakerVerse. If lead time is the primary constraint, that is a real advantage.

Platform verdicts
Here is how each platform performed across the four criteria, and who each one is best suited for.
MakerVerse: best overall for complex CNC parts with tight tolerances
MakerVerse delivered the only fully automatic, order-ready quote for both parts, including Part 2 with nitriding, which either failed or produced a non-comparable result on every other platform. It read tolerance and surface finish specifications directly from the technical drawing in both cases. On price, it returned the lowest binding, orderable quote for both parts.
Standard lead times are longer than Xometry and Protolabs Network. The express tier or the custom lead time request feature covers most time-sensitive cases.
Best fit: procurement engineers and engineering teams who need a reliable, orderable instant quote for precision CNC parts, particularly parts with tight tolerances, surface finish requirements, or post-processing steps like nitriding.
Spanflug: best for price benchmarking, not for direct ordering
Spanflug’s drawing intelligence matched MakerVerse: it correctly linked and read both files. Its Part 1 price was the lowest in the test. The limitation is structural: Spanflug does not support direct ordering. It is a quoting tool, not a procurement platform.
Best fit: teams that want to validate pricing before committing elsewhere, or procurement processes that handle ordering separately.
Protolabs: fastest express option, but not truly instant
For Part 1, Protolabs Network provided the fastest express option in this test at 6–7 working days. The quoting process is not instant: the native Protolabs tool is email-based, and the Network tool required manual tolerance corrections and partially froze during recalculation. For Part 2, only a non-binding estimate was possible, and nitriding was not selectable.
Best fit: simpler parts where express turnaround is the priority and the geometry doesn’t push the limits of the quoting engine.
Xometry: broad service coverage, registration friction
Xometry’s add-on options are the most extensive in this test: part marking, CMM inspection, first article inspection reports, and a wide range of material certificates are all selectable in the tool. The dual-file upload issue on Part 1 adds manual work, and phone number registration is required. Part 2 produced a clean, orderable quote.
Best fit: larger orders where service breadth, add-ons, and in-tool inspection options justify the higher price point.
Fictiv: manual RFQ for complex parts
Instant quoting was not possible for either test part. Fictiv uses a manual quoting workflow for complex or high-precision parts.
Best fit: teams comfortable with a traditional RFQ process and not dependent on instant quotes.
RapidDirect: instant quoting unavailable in this test
Despite multiple attempts, RapidDirect’s instant quoting failed for both parts. Pricing and lead times could not be assessed in this benchmark. Test separately with your specific part geometries before drawing conclusions.
