How to Start a CNC Project: Files and Details You Need

Upload 3D files and drawings together to get accurate CNC quotes on MakerVerse.

MakerVerse is ISO 9001 certified, ensuring the highest quality standards across all our processes.

CNC machining turns digital precision into real, production-grade parts.
At MakerVerse, we see thousands of uploads every month, and one thing stands out: projects with complete files get quoted and produced faster.

If you’re preparing your first CNC project, here’s exactly which files, drawings, and details you need for a smooth quoting and production process.

1. Start with the Right 3D File

The 3D file contains the geometry. MakerVerse uses it to calculate price, manufacturability, and lead time.

✅ Suggested formats:

  • STEP (.step, .stp)

  • STL (.stl)

✅ Other acceptable types:
3DXML, 3MF, ACIS, CATIA V4, CATIA V5, DXF (Drawing Exchange Format), DWG, IGES, Inventor, JT, NX, OBJ, Rhino, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, VDA, 3DS, XCGM, WRL, CTM, Draco, PLY, and more.

Tips

  • Upload only final, production-ready geometry, no assemblies or reference parts.

  • Remove construction planes and auxiliary geometry.

  • Use clear, versioned filenames like Bracket_7075_V3.step.

2. Add a 2D Drawing

The 3D file shows geometry. The 2D drawing defines your intent. Use it to specify tolerances, finishes, and critical features.

Include in your drawing:
Key dimensions and tolerances should follow relevant standards, such as ISO 2768 (Source: ISO 2768) or ASME Y14.5 (Source: ASME Y14.5), for best results. Correct 2D drawings significantly improve manufacturing outcomes[1].

  • Key dimensions and tolerances (ISO or ASME preferred)

  • Threads and tapped holes (e.g., M6 × 1)

  • Surface finish requirements (Ra or qualitative description)

Surface finish requirements (Ra (Roughness Average) or qualitative descriptions like polished, brushed, or chemically blackened) should be specified clearly. Relevant structured data about finishes is included before section 6 to ensure consistent referencing.

  • Material and quantity

  • Revision number and date

MakerVerse supports PDF, DWG, and DXF drawings. Upload them together with your 3D models. Our platform processes these files quickly so you can finalize your design with confidence.

3. Define Material and Finish

If not already specified in your drawing, choose your material and finish directly in the MakerVerse interface.

Typical CNC materials:

  • Aluminum (6061, 7075)[2]

  • Stainless steel (304, 316L)[3]

  • Brass, copper, titanium, tool steels

Common finishes:

  • As-machined

  • Bead-blasted

  • Anodized (various colors)

  • Powder-coated

  • Polished, brushed, or chemically blackened

4. Upload Multiple Parts in One Project

You can upload multiple parts and their drawings. This enables a complete assembly quote.

Guidelines

  • Each part must be uploaded as a separate file (preferably STEP or STL).

  • Drawings are automatically matched to their corresponding 3D files.

  • If parts share the same material or finish, group them to speed up quoting.

This helps our system identify shared setups. It also optimizes costs across your batch.

5. Pre-Upload Checklist

Before submitting your project check these points:

StepCheckpointWhy It Matters
3D ModelFinal geometry in STEP or STLEnsures manufacturability check accuracy
2D DrawingDimensions, tolerances, threadsDefines production requirements
MaterialAluminum, steel, brass, etc.Affects tooling and cost
FinishAs-machined, anodized, etc.Defines look and corrosion resistance
QuantityPrototype or seriesOptimizes price and lead time

6. Upload and Get Your Quote

Once everything is ready, follow these steps:

  1. Go to makerverse.com/app

  2. Upload your 3D files and drawings together

  3. Select material, finish, and quantity

  4. Review your instant or manual quote

  5. Confirm lead time and place your order

Your files and drawings are linked and secured. They remain traceable from upload to delivery.

Starting a CNC project is simple when you prepare the right files. Upload your 3D models and technical drawings in compatible formats to ensure a seamless handoff to production. By optimizing your files for machining, you reduce the risk of errors and accelerate the manufacturing process.

From prototype to production, you get reliable, fast, and high-quality CNC results. This happens every time.
